Bob Fitzsimmons
A Champion in Three Divisions
Bob Fitzsimmons was one of the great boxing champions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Cornwall, England, and raised in New Zealand, Fitzsimmons eventually became an international boxing sensation.
He made history by becoming the first fighter to win world championships in three different weight divisions. Known for his unusual punching technique and tremendous power, Fitzsimmons helped establish boxing as a major spectator sport.
A Boxing Pioneer
Fitzsimmons fought during an important period when boxing was becoming increasingly organized and professional. His career included famous bouts against some of the leading fighters of his generation, helping make him one of the sport’s earliest international stars.
Death
Fitzsimmons died in 1917 at age 54 and is buried in Block 12, Space 831.
